The inaugural Seoul E-Prix was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the race has been included on the Season 7 calendar with a provisional date of May 23, 2021.
The 2021 Seoul E-Prix will be South Korea’s first major motorsport event since the last Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix was held in 2013. A major drawback of the Grand Prix was the five hour travel time from Seoul – something which won’t be an issue with a circuit within the capital city.
In 2018, a feasibility study was undertaken, highlighting the popular tourist area around Gwanghwamun Plaza as a potential venue. One year later, in July 2019, it was confirmed that the race would take place around the former Olympic Park, used in the 1998 Olympics. The 2.8km track is situated to the east of the city centre.
There are 19 corners at the circuit, with Turns 5 to 10 running inside the impressive 70,000 capacity Jamsil Olympic Stadium. The circuit also passes other sporting sights – with the pit-lane adjacent to the Jamsil Baseball Stadium. The event will remain on the calendar until at least 2025.
How to get to the Seoul E-Prix
- The main international airport serving Seoul is called Incheon (ICN). Located on an artificial island to the west of the South Korean capital, it’s one of the largest and best-rated airports in the world. - The Seoul Street Circuit is located within the Jamsil Sports Complex, which hosted the 1998 Summer Olympics. Located south of the Han River, it’s well-connected to the city centre by subway. The Sports Complex Station is located on subway lines 2 & 9 (check the map below).
