After Beijing played host to the Chinese round on the ABB FIA Formula E calendar in season 1 and 2, mainland China makes a comeback on the 2018/2019 calendar with a round in the beach resort town of Sanya.
Located on the Southern tip of China’s Hainan island, Sanya is one of the newest locations for the ABB FIA Formula E championship. Sanya is the 21st city to host a Formula E race and the 2019 Sanya E-Prix was the first Formula E race in China since Beijing in October 2015. The inaugural edition of the Sanya E-Prix took place in March 2019 and was won by Jean-Eric Vergne. The 2020 Sanya E-Prix was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic and is not likely to take place in 2021 either.
Upcoming events at Sanya Street Circuit
The Sanya Street Circuit is a temporary circuit that’s only used for Formula E once a year, though there are plans to make it a more permanent facility. The 2020 Sanya E-Prix (scheduled for March 21) was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic and the race is unlikely to return until at least 2022.
How to get to Sanya on Hainan Island, the home of the Sanya E-Prix.
The main gateway to Sanya is Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX), which has flights to all parts of China and further afield in Asia. Airlines with the largest number of connections to Sanya include Beijing Capital Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines and Sichuan Airlines.
The Sanya Street Circuit is located in the Feng Tang Lu area on the south of Hainan Island, approximately 40km to the east of the city of Sanya. Depending on where you decide to stay, the best way to get around in Sanya is by taxi. Local buses are also available.
