F1 Support Series

Learn more about the junior formulas and other racing series which appear on the support package at Formula 1 Grands Prix around the world.

Attending a Formula 1 race doesn’t just give you the opportunity to witness the world’s best drivers compete at the pinnacle of motorsport. Support races also offer F1 fans the chance to see younger drivers making their way up the racing ladder in junior categories like Formula 2, Formula 3 and F1 Academy. Aside from the junior categories, spectators can catch one-make racing series – like the Porsche Supercup – or historic racing in the form of Masters Historic on the support package.

Below is more information about Formula 1’s support series, plus a race-by-race rundown of which series you can expect to see on-track at each Grand Prix.

Formula 2

Formula 2 is the final rung on the junior formula ladder before the final step up to Formula 1. Formula 2, in various guises, has been a feature on the support package at Grands Prix since the sport’s inception in 1950. Previously known as the GP2 Series from 2005 to 2016, the category rebranded as FIA Formula 2 in 2017.

Since 2017, over 20 Formula 2 drivers have graduated to Formula 1, including series champions Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Mick Schumacher, Nyck de Vries, Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto. In 2025, Lando Norris became the first former FIA Formula 2 driver to be crowned Formula 1 World Champion.

Formula 2 appears on the support package at the majority of European races on the calendar, plus other events in the Middle East and, since 2023, Australia.

Formula 3

Formula 3 is one category below Formula 2, with the most successful drivers from this series usually stepping up to F2 in the following season. Formerly known as GP3 from 2010 to 2018, the series rebranded as FIA Formula 3 in 2019. Ten drivers who have raced in Formula 3 since then have graduated to Formula 1, including series champions Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto.

Aside from visits to Australia and Bahrain for the first and second rounds of the season, Formula 3 races exclusively in Europe.

Porsche Supercup

Porsche Supercup has been a mainstay on the Formula 1 support bill since its inception in 1993. Featuring only at European rounds of the season, the one-make series has had some notable F1 names racing in it over the past 30 years, including Mika Hakkinen, Nick Heidfeld and Timo Glock. In recent years, guest drivers have included motorcycle racer Jorge Lorenzo, actor Patrick Dempsey and Top Gear presenter Chris Harris.

Aside from Porsche Supercup, other one-make Porsche series – like Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, North America, Japan and Middle East – appear as support rounds at other events on the F1 calendar. As part of a deal announced in 2022, Porsche Supercup will remain on the Formula 1 support package until at least 2030.
