For the first time since 2021, the Portuguese Grand Prix will return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027 as part of a two-year contract. A total of 18 F1 races have been staged in Portugal to date, most of which took place at Estoril between 1984 and 1996. The Portimão circuit, officially known as Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (Algarve International Circuit) has to date staged two races, both of which were held with limited spectators in attendance during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The Algarve region, one of the most southernmost in Europe, benefits from excellent weather most of the year and is a popular tourist destination. Race dates are yet to be confirmed for 2027, but it’s possible that Portugal will take over the calendar slot currently held by Barcelona in early June.

Do I Need a Visa for Portugal?
Citizens from the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK don’t need a visa to visit Portugal. Just provide your valid passport on entry and you’ll be granted a stay of up to 90 days in the country. Portugal is part of the Schengen Zone, which comprises 30 European countries (not including the UK & Ireland) with a common visa policy and no internal borders. In the last quarter of 2026, the European Union will introduce a new system, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), for visa-exempt travelers to the Schengen Zone.
Portimão Weather
Close to the northwest coast of Africa, the Algarve Region benefits from some of the sunniest and warmest weather in Europe. Summers in the Algarve are hot and dry, with up to 12 hours of sunshine. The region enjoys over 300 days of sunshine annually and low levels of rainfall.
Safety
The Algarve region of Portugal has low levels of violent crime and is generally very safe, though thieves can target tourist areas and major events such as F1 race weekend. You should always exercise more caution in busy nightlife areas, and never leave valuables in parked cars.
Money
Portugal uses the Euro (€). Cards are accepted in most larger towns and in tourist areas (as well as at the circuit), though it’s always safe to carry a little bit of cash for emergencies or when cards are not accepted. Tipping is not mandatory in Portugal, though rounding up your restaurant bill by 5-10% is welcomed when service is good.

About Portugal
Portugal, with a population of just over 10 million, is situated on the Iberian peninsula in southwestern Europe. One of the oldest countries in Europe, and at one time its most powerful, Portugal was founded in 1143. Lisbon is the capital, and the economic and cultural center.
Mass tourism arrived to the Algarve region on the Atlantic coast in the 1960s with the development of large-scale resorts and related tourist infrastructure. The Algarve region is popular for its excellent sunny weather all year round, sandy beaches, golf courses and white-washed fishing villages. Algarve International Circuit (also known as Portimão) was completed in 2008 at a cost of approximately €200m.
