Staying in Monaco on race weekend is out of reach for most fans, but the nearby large French coastal city of Nice is a good compromise. Nice has accommodation to suit all budgets and is just a short, direct train ride from Monaco. Speaking of trains, you can also easily reach Monaco from Menton and Ventimiglia to the east. Transport in and out of Monaco over the race weekend is frequent, with cheap options by rail and road.

Stay in Monaco

Monaco is known as the ‘Millionaire’s Playground’ because of the people who have always chosen to reside there, and because of its decision not to tax their income. Many F1 drivers only have to step out of their apartments in order to race on the streets each season. There are only a handful of hotels within the principality, most of which are in high demand and priced accordingly on Grand Prix weekend, especially those with direct views of the circuit. If you want a ‘room with a view’ on race weekend, you’ll pay at least 5000-10000 per night. If this price doesn’t scare you, here are the best options with direct views of the circuit:

• Hotel De Paris Monte Carlo; iconic heritage hotel overlooking Casino Square
• Fairmont Monte Carlo: built in 1975 and lacking the grandeur of some hotels on this list, but with incredible views of the hairpin
• Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo: another grand and historic hotel, overlooking the Beau Rivage and Massenet corners 
• Hotel Metropole: historic hotel overlooking the Mirabeau right-hander before the hairpin, though views are not as good as other hotels on this list
• Port Palace Hotel: modern hotel overlooking Port Hercule with partial views of the Nouvelle Chicane
• Boutique Hotel Miramar – Monte Carlo: the smallest and most affordable hotel with views is sandwiched between two sections of track, overlooking the harbor

Other hotels worth considering include the 3-star Novotel Monte Carlo, a modern hotel in an elevated section of the principality between the train station and Casino Square. “Executive Rooms with Balcony” on the uppermost floors offer a distant view down the hill to the exit of the opening Sainte Devote corner and the run up to Beau Rivage. On the eastern side of the principality, you’ll also find two iconic 5-star hotels, Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and Le Méridien Beach Plaza, both of which boast direct beach access and multiple restaurants and bars. In Fontvieille to the west, Columbus Hotel Monte-Carlo, Curio Collection by Hilton is recommended.

If staying in Monaco itself is beyond your budget, then it’s also worth checking out Fontvieille, which is walking distance to the immediate west of Monaco, and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, immediately to the east of the principality (one stop on the train).

Stay in Nice

The atmosphere in Nice is vibrant on Grand Prix weekend. You won’t feel like you’re missing out by not being in Monaco, because the die-hard F1 fans stay here! If you have a little more time to spare, we highly recommend Nice as a tourist spot in its own right. With a beautiful old town, stunning beaches and plenty of history and culture, it’s worth taking an extra few days to explore the city and its surroundings.

In terms of accommodation, if you can afford something really classy, the Hotel Aston La Scala boasts an excellent central location, and a chic rooftop terrace with bar, which really kicks off in high season, becoming one of the best outdoor nightclubs in the city. The Hôtel Helvétique may not host such extraordinary parties, but its good central location, just 700 meters from the Promenade des Anglais (the main road that skirts the beach), and the beach itself, makes it an excellent choice. Hostel Ozz Nice is a budget hostel that doesn’t scrimp on style, and is two minutes from the railway station or 15 minutes’ walk from the beach.

Among the attractions of Nice for tourists are long, unblemished, sandy beaches, next to rugged stony beaches, all of which are filled with happy vacationers throughout the spring and summer. The aforementioned clubs are world-renowned, if on the expensive side. If you want to get away from the crowds, the hills surrounding Nice – which are the secluded home to the likes of Elton John – feature Roman ruins, and the most Instagram-worthy views of the coastline you’ll find anywhere. Nice is just a short – and seriously picturesque – coastal train ride from Monaco, and with a thriving social scene all year round, it’s the perfect base for race weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Stay in Menton

Menton is a pretty village just 10km east of Monaco. Founded by pirates back in the 13th Century, it features a picture-postcard old town with houses and shops of every color and type. It’s also known for the hills surrounding it, which loom over this charming destination. Menton might not be the place to go if you want a booming nightlife (that’s Nice), but there are many other charms that you’d miss out on if you didn’t give its smaller neighbor a try. 

The Hotel Princess et Richmond is a good option for Menton, while if you want to save on the room and instead put your money into Monaco, then Menton’s Ibis Styles Menton Centre is reliably no-frills and no-surprises. Menton is just a 12-minute train ride from Monaco, making it one of the best places to look for accommodation for race week. Stay on the Italian Riviera

There are towns small and large dotted along the Mediterranean cost near Monaco, both on the French side and the Italian side. A little further east of Menton, the first town on the Italian side is Ventimiglia. A little further along the coast and with more accommodation to choose from is Sanremo, also recommended. You will find lots of F1 fans in these towns on Grand Prix weekend, and there are trains and buses to get you to the circuit. Prices are also significantly lower than in Nice. 

Stay in Ventimiglia

Ventimiglia is a Liguria coastal town with none of the pretensions of its near-neighbors, the locals preferring instead to go about their business in an understated way. This might make it a great choice for you if you prefer booking a haven away from the hustle and bustle of Grand Prix weekend, though you can expect crowds in town for the regular street market, which attracts people from all over the vicinity. If you’re looking for a nice place to stay in Ventimiglia, we recommend hotels such as the Hotel Posta, which will not break the bank in spite of impressive facilities and service.

Stay in Sanremo

Sanremo is host to one of the biggest cultural festivals in Italy, and also a major cycle race, and long-time motorsport fans will also be aware of the rally which used the town as a hub. Bussana Vecchia is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, with multiple other ancient ruins that are sure to capture the attention of any history geeks in your group. We also recommend you take a walk through the beautiful Piazza Bresca, which features orange trees and palm trees, and has long been a gathering spot for locals and visitors.

Hotel Belle Epoque is an excellent choice if you want to stay in Sanremo, with a pool and a panoramic ocean view plus concierge service, but all at three-star prices. Hotel Belsoggiorno is also only a short walk from the beach, and Sanremo’s own historic casino. Locals trains, normally departing every 30 minutes, will take you from Ventimiglia to Monaco in 41 minutes, or from Sanremo to Monaco, at 90-minute intervals, in 81 minutes.

Monaco Grand Prix Camping

Monaco is the only race on the European F1 calendar that doesn’t offer campsites within walking distance of the circuit, but there are some good options not too far away, particularly next to the beach between Nice and Antibes. Well-rated campsites in this area include Camping Du Pylone, La Vieille Ferme and Camping Parc Des Maurettes. From this area, you can take regular direct trains to Gare du Monaco that take about 45 minutes.

To the east of Monaco, there are several campsites located on the hill overlooking Menton, but recent reviews are quite poor. Further to the east and on the Italian side of the border, Camping Por La Mar, is a well-rated campsite midway between Menton and Ventimiglia. Camping Por La Mar is about 5 km from the nearest train station, but offers free transfers on Monaco Grand Prix weekend. Another good option on the Italian side is Camping Vallecrosia, which is located within walking distance of the Vallecrosia train station.
